Do I have to be flexible?
No, you do not have to be flexible. All Bikram Yoga postures are accessible for your body. Follow the instructions as well as you can, work on breathing and alignment, and you will notice how quickly your body will change, and how fast you will gain flexibility and strength.
Can I lose weight by practising Bikram Yoga?
Yes, there are great aerobic qualities in this class, and you burn a lot of calories. At the same time, you are increasing physical awareness, detoxing your body, relaxing your brain and finally optimising all essential systems in your body. So, yes: you can lose weight in a healthy and permanent way.
Why the heat?
A warm body makes it safer to bend and stretch. The temperature also raises your heart rate and widens the veins, which intensifies the detoxing process. It further limits your body from using excessive power and strength, which makes it safer to practise.
The heat intensifies all benefits of regular hatha yoga. It teaches you how to breathe better, to focus and to accept your limits; it also gives your body the chance to improve and make changes on a very deep level.
What if I feel unwell in class?
Some dizziness, and perhaps a little nausea at times, is very normal in the beginning. These symptoms are caused by deep compressions of organs and the vascular system when toxins are being released in your body. Headaches are mostly caused by dehydration. Just stay on your mat, concentrate on your breath and take a break if you need to.
